These two postcards with portraits of Queen Wilhelmina were made by Richard Kameke sometime before 1898. The muted tones of these postcards set an intimate mood. You know, making art often feels like piecing together a puzzle. The way these images are presented, it's not just about the queen herself, but also about how we see her, how we remember her. There's a softness to the light, a gentleness in the way the images are framed within the scrapbook page. I find myself drawn to the way the photographs are framed by the mounting card. The pale green colour and sharp angles against the slightly faded, soft monochrome of the photographs. This contrast highlights a sense of historical distance. It makes you think about how we preserve and present images, how each choice changes the way we see them. It reminds me of the work of artists like Gerhard Richter. His blurred photographs encourage us to consider how meaning is constructed through a layering of perspectives and interpretations.
