Winslow Homer made this small print titled ‘Life in Camp, Part 2: The Rifle Pit.’ Here, a soldier, with a rifle across his body, is positioned against the backdrop of a rudimentary fortification. The chromatic scale emphasizes the soldier and contrasts the foreground. This is most visible in the juxtaposition of the soldier’s colorful uniform against the neutral tones of the rifle pit. This directs our focus to the main figure, but also flattens the pictorial space. In this print, Homer masterfully reduces depth to draw attention to form and surface. The visual elements, such as the soldier’s posture and the rough texture of the rifle pit, invite us to contemplate the nature of representation and perception. The print destabilizes fixed meanings and engages with new ways of thinking about space and representation in the context of the American Civil War.
