Will Be, Will Be 1987

This poster by Branko Bačanović is all hard-edged shapes in block colours, printed who knows when. The poster feels like it just happened, like Bačanović dreamt it up, put it down and that was it. It's so simple, and yet so striking. I’m thinking about that central form, like a simplified bird. It's made up of contrasting yellow and blues, quite flat colours. You can see it as a bird-like figure connecting to the happy couple in the photo above. It's not messing around with gradients or fussy details. It reminds me of pop art, and also of how folk artists make work. Bačanović’s piece is part of this ongoing visual conversation, a way of seeing how the simple image, the essence of something, is often the most powerful. It's about taking an idea and making it sing with as few notes as possible.
