Here we see "Age of Anxiety" by the contemporary artist Ben, rendered with layered brushstrokes of watercolor. Dominating the composition is a stark white bed, seemingly suspended in a deep blue-grey atmosphere, which might evoke feelings of isolation. The artist employs a striking contrast between the ethereal bed and the textured, almost turbulent background. The figures in the foreground, rendered in warm tones, appear as observers, perhaps representing our own voyeuristic engagement with the scene. There is a sense of distance, not just visually, but emotionally, as if the viewer is kept separate from the central figure's experience. The juxtaposition of the stark lines of the bed against the soft, amorphous background challenges our understanding of form and space. Does it invite us to consider the liminal spaces between wakefulness and sleep, reality and imagination? The artist uses formal elements to probe deeper into the viewers own anxieties and the ways we confront our own vulnerabilities.
