Hryhorii Havrylenko made this drawing in pencil, layering areas of blue, green, and grey, punctuated with floating violet and crimson forms. I imagine him, methodically shading, building up the image, bit by bit, adjusting the pressure of the pencil, going back and forth between the colors. Look at the surface. You can see the texture of the paper coming through. It makes me think about the physical act of drawing, the way the artist’s hand moved across the page, filling in each shape with careful strokes, and the sound the pencil must have made. Havrylenko's use of muted tones creates a quiet, dreamlike atmosphere. The forms feel organic and abstract at the same time. Is he thinking about landscape or something else entirely? It's all very open. The longer I look, the more I feel a sense of connection, a shared human desire to make sense of the world through art. Artists are always responding to each other, building on ideas, and pushing boundaries, even across time and space.
