Bela Czobel made this painting of a sleeping girl in 1930, and what strikes me is its tender, almost clumsy approach. The colours are earthy – burnt oranges, deep blues, and milky whites, all blended and blurred as if feeling their way across the canvas. Looking closely, you can see how the paint is applied in these thick, almost sculptural daubs, particularly around the contours of her arm and the folds of the blue blanket. It's like Czobel was more interested in the physicality of the paint itself than in precise representation. Notice the dark mark under the girls arm, it is a striking imperfection that makes the painting feel more real. This reminds me of the way some of the Fauvist painters like Vlaminck used colour and texture to convey emotion. There is an undeniable intimacy in this painting, as though we are witnessing a private, unguarded moment. This is not about perfection. It's about feeling, about the sheer joy and struggle of trying to capture a fleeting moment in paint.
