Jean-Charles François created this drawing of two soldiers on horseback using graphite. The soldiers, adorned in armor, are presented in a manner which romanticizes military exploits. During the 18th century in France, military prowess was deeply intertwined with national identity and aristocratic ideals. Yet, consider how the image presents a perspective primarily concerned with those in command, obscuring the experiences of the common soldier. We might ponder whose stories are being told and whose are left out. The sketch-like quality of the drawing leaves room for the imagination. The lines and forms encourage viewers to project their own interpretations onto the scene. François invites us to reflect on the complex narratives of power, duty, and sacrifice that are embodied in the figure of the soldier.
