This drawing of a drummer was made by Patricq Kroon, but we don’t know exactly when. It looks like it was made using ink on paper. The marks here are very direct, and the whole thing has a sense of humor, doesn’t it? Look at how the marks make up the shadow, like cross hatching scribbles, especially around the feet. There is nothing subtle here. It’s like Kroon is saying, “here is a mark, and here is another one.” I love the way the drawing creates a world with a few simple lines. It reminds me a little of Honoré Daumier, another artist who worked with accessible imagery to represent a political point of view, making art that is part cartoon and part critique. It’s a conversation between artists across time and space. And isn’t that the best part of art?
