Here's an undated photograph, attributed to M.M. Couvée, of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik on horseback in a park. I can imagine the artist and the royal couple trying to get the perfect shot, a scene unfolding through trial and error, intuition and chance. The sepia tones create a subdued atmosphere, where light and shadow play across the scene. The horses, with their muscular forms and gentle eyes, stand patiently, the weight of their riders barely visible. Wilhelmina sits upright with confidence, her gaze direct and self-assured, while Hendrik sits beside her. I think of other painters, how artists engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Photography can also be an act of expression, embracing ambiguity and allowing multiple interpretations. There is an exchange of ideas between the photographer and the subjects, and then between the viewer and the photograph itself. We bring our own perspectives, experiences, and emotions, allowing for multiple interpretations beyond fixed meanings.
