This page of notes concerning the dimensions of Hvam Church was made by Niels Larsen Stevns, date unknown. It's incredible to see this artifact of the artist’s process, more like a notebook page than a finished piece. The writing, a simple dark ink on a worn, creamy page, feels immediate and practical. Look at the looping, cursive script – it's so casual, so unpretentious. You can almost feel him there, quickly jotting down measurements and observations. I’m drawn to the bottom right corner where the page has been torn, what happened here I wonder? This piece makes me think about how the most interesting art often comes from the act of looking, of really seeing and recording the world around us, and that art is about making those observations visible. Think of other artists who have used text in their work, like Cy Twombly, or even the concrete poets of the 1960's. They remind us that art is always in conversation with what came before, building on and responding to the ideas of other artists across time.
