This is an untitled print by Joan Miró, made with lithography – it's anyone’s guess when. I wonder about the making of this piece: did Miró make a lot of attempts before finding the right composition of lines and colours? I see a playful conversation between red, yellow, blue, and green, each shape distinct yet harmoniously connected by these quirky, nervous lines. That looping blue feels so good. It makes me think of his wider practice, how he embraced chance and improvisation, allowing forms to emerge from the subconscious. You can see he wasn’t afraid to let his hand wander, to explore the space between intention and accident. Miró, like all artists, was in an ongoing conversation with the history of painting and inspiring those of us who followed. This is how artists help each other to see and think. His paintings remind us that art doesn't always need to be serious or profound, it can also be joyful, playful, and wonderfully strange.
