Alfred Freddy Krupa made "The crown of my house" with a brush and ink, and I’m immediately drawn to the way the crown is depicted. It's not just sitting there; it's got these root-like extensions, almost like it's growing into or out of something. There’s such a sense of immediacy in the mark-making – look at the drips of ink that suggest a fleeting moment, a process in motion. The ink is so dense, so black, that it's almost sculptural, creating depth and shadow. But then, there are these delicate, almost tentative lines sketching out the background, offering contrast. That big block of black at the bottom; I keep coming back to it. It's grounded but also a bit ominous, and the bold strokes remind me of the German Expressionists, like Kirchner, maybe? But with its starkness and intensity, this piece feels very much its own thing, capturing a raw, unfiltered emotion. It's a reminder that art doesn't always need to be pretty; it can be powerful, and a little bit unsettling.
