This linen damask napkin with a hawthorn design was designed by Chris Lebeau at an unknown date. It has been made with a meticulous attention to detail. The design is all about texture, from the tight grid in the center, to the botanical forms dancing around the border of the piece. Lebeau uses the grid as a grounding point; from which to lift off into the floral designs of the boarder, and then back again. The light in the piece catches on these different patterns, giving the design a delicate kind of movement. This textile reminds me of the graphic work of Agnes Martin. I like the idea of these artists sharing ideas about pattern across different artistic media. It reminds me that art, whatever form it takes, is a conversation between artists across time.
