This vintage photograph, Pauluskerk te Baarn, shows a church rendered in shades of sepia. Looking at it, I wonder if the photographer was trying to capture the divine in the everyday? The way the light catches the side of the church, gives it a ghostly feel. I imagine the photographer, probably working with heavy equipment, carefully composing each shot, waiting for the right moment when light and shadow come together in an interesting way. I find myself drawn to the subtle variations in tone, the way the texture of the stone is rendered, a real feat. You could say that photography and painting are very different, but both are about seeing, interpreting, and translating the world. Both are a process of exploration. Each mark, each decision, builds on the last.
