Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this decorative design with pencil and ink; it's all about the energy of the hunt! What strikes me is the tension between precision and fluidity. You’ve got these bold, graphic shapes – the solid black circle, the stylized figures of the hunter and hounds – but then you see the ghostly pencil lines underneath, the artist feeling his way through the composition. Look how the artist has laid down the ink in a way that feels both deliberate and spontaneous. See that arc of ink above the hunter's head? The way it curls and flourishes, it reminds me that art making is a process. You can see the artist thinking through the image, and almost catch a glimpse of the intention as it moved from his mind, through his arm, and onto the page. This piece reminds me a bit of Aubrey Beardsley, with its Art Nouveau flair and interest in graphic design, but I love how Cachet brings a rawness to it, a sense of immediacy and play. It’s a reminder that art is never truly finished, that there’s always room for another mark, another idea, another interpretation.
