This is Carel Adolph Lion Cachet's 'Decoratief ontwerp met hazenjager', made with pen and paper. I imagine this artwork was a shifting and emerging image through trial, error, and intuition. It's just so interesting to think about Cachet drawing this and what he might have been thinking. It's an artist who wants to play with the idea of the circle, of flatness, but also of movement. The hunter strides forward, dogs leap after him, hair flies about. I'm really drawn to how the black ink is solid and confident. It reminds me of the work of other artists in the 19th century such as Aubrey Beardsley, but is unique to Cachet. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity.
