Curator: Look at this exquisitely rendered etching by Jacques Callot, "Exaltation of the Cross." Editor: It's so small! Yet, the scene feels monumental, almost claustrophobic, with everyone crammed into that oval frame. I get a sense of immense weight, both literal and symbolic. Curator: The meticulous detail in the architecture and the figures is remarkable for such a diminutive work, isn't it? The lines create an atmosphere of somber reverence. Callot's use of line and perspective draws the eye. Editor: You're right. The cross dominates the space. I wonder, though, if the “exaltation” is meant ironically? Everyone looks burdened, even the soldiers seem weary. It makes you wonder if there is any joy in this religious act? Curator: An interesting perspective. Thank you for sharing that. Editor: Thanks for the invitation!
