Curator: What’s immediately fascinating to me is how Jonson manipulates the very substance of oil paint. The way he layers the blues and greens, fractured by these geometric shapes, speaks to the artist’s process, the physical act of applying paint. Is it simply landscape, or are we seeing the materials used to comment on societal structures? Notice the stark contrast between the almost industrial precision of the shapes, with those figures within that appear powerless, as if determined by these lines. How does this tension make you feel? Editor: I see what you mean about the material commenting on societal structure. I guess I was caught up in the symbolism. But that tension, you’re right, it’s really unsettling! Those geometric shapes almost feel like they are caging in the people within. Do you think Jonson’s choice of oil, a more traditional medium, clashes with his modern style, enhancing that tension even more? Curator: Absolutely! The decision to use oil is deliberate. Its history as the choice of the wealthy and the powerful gives it a loaded significance. And note that although Jonson paints human forms, the shapes have become their defining factor. It almost feels like our place in the society has become more and more defined by production rather than experience. Does it challenge the traditional notion of what is meant by art or what is accepted within the art world? Editor: I never considered the impact of materials and their connection to socio-economic status. That perspective changes everything for me! I initially focused on the dreamy quality but now recognize the sharp edges representing how material reality confines even our dreams. Curator: Indeed, art at its best forces us to think beyond the surface, it reveals something profound and powerful regarding societal concerns through use of technique.
