Textielmarkt aan een rivier 1903 - 1907

This photograph titled "Textielmarkt aan een rivier," by an anonymous artist, captures a river textile market, in dimensions of approximately 215 mm in height and 280 mm in width, or 385 mm in height and 440 mm in width. What strikes me is how the composition balances the soft textures of the trees with the more angular lines of the textiles on display. The artist has used a limited tonal range, giving the whole scene a kind of hazy, dreamlike quality. You can almost feel the humidity in the air, see the way the light catches the leaves. It’s a reminder that art is often about capturing a moment, a feeling, more than a literal representation. This piece reminds me a bit of the early work of Gerhard Richter, in its use of photographic source material and its exploration of the effects of memory and time. What do you think?
