Frans Hens created this etching of two sailing ships on water sometime before his death in 1928. Hens, a Belgian artist, was deeply engaged with the natural world and the lives of those who worked upon it. This image invites us to consider the relationship between labor, leisure, and the sea. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sailing was both a means of commerce and a recreational activity, sharply divided by class. Consider the rough, unadorned vessels depicted here. Do they speak to the labor-intensive lives of fishermen and sailors, or do they represent a romantic escape from the industrialized world? The artist’s delicate etching technique lends a certain fragility to the scene, mirroring the precariousness of life at sea. The quiet stillness of the water and the soft light evoke a sense of solitude and introspection, but also of a deep connection to the natural world, a world that both sustains and challenges humanity. How does this image make you feel about the sea?
