Louis Faurer made this photograph of Robert and Mary Frank at the San Gennaro Festival in New York City. I love the way the image is soft and grainy, like a memory. It’s hard to tell exactly what's going on. Is it a romantic shot? Are they a couple? What is the context around them? I can imagine Faurer snapping the shot quickly, trying to capture a fleeting moment amidst the chaos of the festival. The composition is so intriguing, with the Franks slightly off-center, almost as if they're being pulled in different directions. There's a sense of intimacy between the two, but also a feeling of detachment. It reminds me of some of the street photography of that time, like Helen Levitt, who captured these spontaneous, unposed moments of everyday life. It’s the kind of image that stays with you, inviting you to fill in the gaps and create your own story.
