This page from "Art - Goût - Beauté" made in 1932 by L. de Morinni with ink and graphite feels like a spontaneous overflow of the artist’s impressions of the world. I can feel a rhythm of observation being translated into the work through these sketches. I can imagine Morinni sitting in a cafe, maybe even in the Casino d’Enghien described here, rapidly sketching the social life all around. The material quality is immediate, the thin lines capture fleeting impressions of light and atmosphere, evoking a sense of time and place. The controlled tonal gradations feel really modern. It’s cool how this relates to the wider practices of illustration, where artists document everyday life. It reminds me of some of Daumier’s social satires. You sense an ongoing dialogue between artists across time, each of them trying to interpret reality through their own artistic lens. I think that art is just such a beautiful exploration of uncertainty, offering multiple ways to see and experience life.
