This page from "Art - Goût - Beauté" magazine, dated June 1932, shows us the Casino d’Enghien, not far from Paris. The artist, L. de Morinni, used delicate linework, which reminds me of quick sketches done in situ. The tones are light, almost washed, which adds to the feeling of a casual glance, as if these scenes were captured on the fly. Look at the tables outside the casino. The figures seem to float in space, their forms only loosely defined. This lightness gives the illustration a dreamlike quality. It's more about capturing the atmosphere, the *feeling* of leisure and elegance, than presenting a precise depiction. This approach reminds me of some of Cocteau’s drawings, both artists focusing on capturing a certain mood rather than photographic realism. I think art is often about hinting and suggesting, rather than stating outright, and this piece does that so well.
