Victor Müller made this pencil drawing of a standing nude next to a Sphinx at an undetermined time. The immediate impression is of effortlessness, a quick sketch dashed off to capture an idea. But in fact, that look is deceptive. Think of all that goes into a drawing like this. The graphite in the pencil had to be mined, processed, and refined. The paper itself, though humble, is a manufactured material, a distant cousin of textiles. And of course, there’s the artist’s own labor – the countless hours of practice required to achieve such a seemingly simple result. Seen this way, the drawing becomes more than just an image. It’s a testament to the complex relationships between materials, making, and the artist's work. It invites us to consider the many hands and processes that contribute to even the most seemingly spontaneous artistic expression.
