Victor Müller made this pencil drawing of a standing nude next to a Sphinx at an undetermined time. The immediate impression is of effortlessness, a quick sketch dashed off to capture an idea. But in fact, that look is deceptive. Think of all that goes into a drawing like this. The graphite in the pencil had to be mined, processed, and refined. The paper itself, though humble, is a manufactured material, a distant cousin of textiles. And of course, there’s the artist’s own labor – the countless hours of practice required to achieve such a seemingly simple result. Seen this way, the drawing becomes more than just an image. It’s a testament to the complex relationships between materials, making, and the artist's work.
