Ľudovít Čordák made this painting, Still Life with Apples, with oil on canvas. It looks like it all started with a dark background. Then, maybe, Čordák worked outwards, building from dark to light, conjuring these simple objects using small touches of colour. Look at how he renders the apples with reds, greens, and yellows, and sets them against the stark white tablecloth. I can imagine him trying to capture the light as it hits each one, trying to show its form. I love how painters from all different eras are in constant conversation with one another. Even a simple still life like this is, in some ways, an attempt to grapple with painting itself. There is a sense of spontaneity and imperfection, which is, after all, where the real beauty lies.
