Editor: So, here we have a silhouette portrait of James Warren Sever by Curtis & Cameron. I’m immediately struck by the simplicity of the form. What do you make of it? Curator: This work speaks volumes about representation and power. Silhouettes, historically, offered a more accessible form of portraiture, yet they also flattened identity. Who had access to even this 'simplified' form, and what does it mean to be rendered as a shadow? Consider the socio-economic implications. Editor: That makes me think about who is being seen, and who is not. Thank you. Curator: Indeed. And whose stories remain in the shadows, and how can art bring those stories to light?
