Antonio Carneiro made this painting of a man reading on some rocks with oil on canvas. Look at the way Carneiro layers the sandy yellow of the rocks, contrasting them against the somber figure of the man and the washed-out sky. I imagine Carneiro standing on the beach, squinting to see, trying to capture the light as it bounces off the rocks, mixing shades of yellow, ochre and brown on his palette. Did he start with thin washes of color, gradually building up the texture and form? I see him stepping back, then moving in close, trying to get it just right. That dark line defining the edge of the rock – it's so bold and confident, and yet it's also kind of playful, like a little wink. I feel the influence of Impressionism here, and the way artists like Monet were trying to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. But Carneiro brings his own sensibility to it, a kind of quiet introspection that makes it feel so special. Painting is a continuous exchange!
