John Gutmann made this gelatin silver print, Reach, San Francisco, sometime in the middle of the 20th century. The light and shadow are so balanced, it almost looks like a drawing. I love the soft, muted tones Gutmann coaxes from the silver gelatin. It’s a study in contrasts: the sleek, art deco hood ornament of a woman reaching forward, compared to the man in a fedora walking by, his form more blurred and indistinct. That hood ornament is so sharp and clear; you can almost feel the cool metal in your hand. Then, the almost ghostly presence of the man passing by. Gutmann’s sense of composition, framing these elements together, turns a simple street scene into something surreal. It makes me think of other photographers like Lisette Model, who found poetry in the everyday. It's that ability to find beauty in the unexpected, in the fleeting moments, that makes this photograph so captivating. It’s about capturing the spirit of a time, but also something timeless.
