This floor vase was made by Gustav Heinkel, but the date and medium are unknown. What I love about this piece is how the geometric forms float on the surface. It’s like the memory of a grid, playfully disrupted. The colours feel like they've been watered down to create a feeling of lightness and transparency. You can see the way the forms and hues play off one another, creating this really dynamic surface. Notice how the square shapes have been laid out with uneven spacing. This gives the piece a kind of playful, irregular rhythm. Look closely, and you'll see a surface texture, with these small, web-like cracks. I wonder if these happened intentionally, or are a result of the materials naturally changing over time? It makes me think of the work of Paul Klee, who was also interested in colour, and geometry as a kind of visual language. Ultimately, this piece feels lighthearted and open-ended, inviting us to bring our own associations and interpretations to it.
