This floor vase was made by Gustav Heinkel, but we don't know exactly when, or how. Looking at this gorgeous, bulbous thing I immediately want to know how it feels. I can imagine the artist coaxing the clay into shape, smoothing the surface, then meticulously applying each of those colorful geometric forms. What a process! What might it have been like to create something like this? The primary colors and grid-like layout give it the feel of early modern art. It has a touch of Bauhaus, or maybe a hint of De Stijl. Artists build on the ideas of those who came before, and I wonder if Heinkel was looking at Piet Mondrian or Theo van Doesburg when they constructed this. It reminds us that art-making is all one big, ongoing conversation through time. It’s about experimenting and pushing boundaries, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and trusting the journey of creation. What do you think it means?
