Koloman Moser made this linocut, Dancer, at an undetermined date. It's all about bold contrasts. The interplay of stark black and white areas creates a dynamic, rhythmic flow. It makes me think about how the process itself—carving away at the linoleum—dictates the shapes and textures. Look closely and you'll notice the texture of the ground, adding depth and dimension to the work. There is a square shape, that has been used across the image that draws my eye. Its almost like a game of chess is being played. It gives the artwork an extra playful twist. I'm reminded of the graphic boldness of Art Nouveau posters, and maybe even a touch of Aubrey Beardsley's decadent illustrations. But ultimately, Moser brings his unique vision to the dance, inviting us to find our own rhythm in its ambiguous spaces.
