This is Jan Veth's 1895 etching of Isaäc Dignus Fransen van de Putte now held at the Rijksmuseum. Observe Fransen van de Putte's formal attire. His suit and bow tie communicate authority. We can see how a similar motif has appeared across history, such as in Renaissance portraits where the subjects donned elaborate clothing to convey their status and importance. The suit as a symbol of power has continued to evolve. Think of the modern business suit. It is a uniform of sorts, meant to convey competence and seriousness. Yet it is a far cry from the ruffled collars of the past, reflecting a shift in cultural values toward practicality and efficiency. There is a deep, subconscious need to present oneself in a manner that commands respect and asserts influence. These symbols are constantly revisited throughout history, adapting to new contexts, each leaving its imprint on our collective memory.
