Curatorial notes

Abraham Delfos created this watercolor and pencil drawing called "Niemand sprak er" – "Nemo Loquebatur" – depicting a gathering in a lavish interior. Notice the striking silence among the figures, emphasized by the title's Latin phrase, 'no one speaks'. Observe how the figures are arranged, with some gathered around a table, others scattered about the room, and one old man sitting by the fireplace. This arrangement echoes the classical motif of the symposium, a gathering of men, often depicted in ancient Greek and Roman art, engaged in conversation. Yet here, the symposium is eerily muted. The silent gathering may symbolize social unease or perhaps the weight of unspoken thoughts within this group. Silence, often a symbol of contemplation or respect, can also be a potent expression of unspoken tension or a shared secret. This visual representation engages our collective memory, tapping into the latent psychological effects that silence can evoke. In the grand theater of history, such motifs are continually revisited, reshaped, and imbued with new layers of significance.
