This is a woodcut graphic art piece by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and it's the cover of a book. I just love to think about the making of a woodcut! The artist's hand guiding the blade, cutting away at the block of wood, each slice a commitment. Look at how the forms are simplified, almost brutal, but so full of energy. You feel like you are right there with Kirchner, carving out this raw vision. I wonder if he felt like he was wrestling with the material? The figure in the center seems to be surrounded by sharp-edged flora. There is also an intimidating sky overhead. What do you think he was thinking? I imagine Kirchner channeling his inner anxieties, and excitement, transforming them into something tangible. It's like a conversation with the German Expressionists and the folks of Die Brücke, all pushing the boundaries of art! I think we can appreciate that art isn't about answers, but about posing questions and embracing the beautiful mess that is life.
