This is 'Zeegezicht', a pencil drawing by Monogrammist DS, dating back to around 1873. The drawing, whose title translates to 'Seascape', gives us a glimpse into the artist's perception of the sea and its connection to Dutch identity. Living through the late 19th century, Monogrammist DS would have witnessed significant social and cultural shifts. The sea, central to the Netherlands' history of trade and naval power, also carries a complex symbolism related to themes of exploration, colonialism, and the relationship between humanity and nature. Here, the depiction of the sea has a somber emotional tone due to the grey pencil tones and rather simple shapes. Note how traditional landscape art often romanticizes nature, yet here, the drawing is an attempt to develop a more alternative narrative. This rendering echoes the increasing industrialization and the changing relationship between the Dutch and their environment, perhaps suggesting a more reflective perspective on their maritime history. The seascape feels personal and internalized, opening a space for contemplating our individual and collective relationships with the world.
