Blank; verso: Drapery Study (Waist and legs) c. 19th century
Dimensions 13.4 x 9.4 cm (5 1/4 x 3 11/16 in.)
Editor: This is Edward Burne-Jones' study of drapery, just a small pencil sketch. It feels very classical, but also a bit unfinished. What do you see in this quick study? Curator: It's interesting, isn’t it? More than just a study of fabric, I see a whisper of the classical ideals that haunted Burne-Jones – a fragment of a forgotten statue, perhaps? The lines are so tentative, as if he's trying to catch a fleeting dream on paper. Editor: A dream, that's a nice way of putting it. Curator: Indeed. It's a glimpse into the artist's process, a quiet moment of contemplation before the grand tapestries and paintings. What do you take away from it? Editor: It makes me want to look closer at his finished works to see where this sketch led him. Curator: Exactly! It's all connected.
