Curatorial notes
Pieter Oosterhuis captured this image of Arti et Amicitiae on the Rokin in Amsterdam using photography. The sepia tones create a uniform atmosphere, enveloping the architectural facades and still water. The linear composition, with buildings aligned along the canal, emphasizes a structured, almost grid-like arrangement. Oosterhuis employs the reflected symmetry of water to destabilize traditional perspective, questioning the fixity of representation. Reflections distort and duplicate the architectural forms. This challenges our perception of space and reality, presenting a world where what seems solid is mutable. The play of light and shadow on the water further abstracts the scene. Note how Oosterhuis uses photography to not just record but to interpret and transform the urban landscape. The photograph prompts us to reconsider the interplay between stability and change, representation and reality.
