This is a watercolor study by Carl Bloch, made in preparation for his 1868 history painting, "Niels Ebbesen and Count Gert". You can see Bloch exploring the fall of light on fabric, the delicate washes of color and careful draughtsmanship, and the way he’s used these to bring out the sheen and volume of the bed hangings. The choice of watercolor, a medium often associated with preparatory sketches, is interesting. It allows for a fluid, almost improvisational approach, very different from the labor-intensive methods of traditional oil painting. Yet, it also demonstrates a high level of technical skill, particularly in the control of washes and the rendering of textures. In a way, this study embodies a challenge to the hierarchies of art, placing value on the immediacy and expressiveness of the artist's hand, rather than just the finished product. It reminds us that even in historical painting, the touch of the artist, the process of making, are always present, shaping our experience.
