Henri Borremans created this depiction of the pulpit in St. Bavo's Cathedral using engraving. Notice the tree-like structure above the pulpit, laden with fruit—a clear allusion to the Tree of Knowledge from the Garden of Eden. This symbol is intertwined with the Cross, a powerful juxtaposition of sin and redemption. We find echoes of this motif in medieval tapestries and illuminated manuscripts, where the Tree of Knowledge is often depicted alongside scenes of the Crucifixion, reminding viewers of humanity's fall and subsequent salvation. The symbolism evokes a deep, psychological tension—the human desire for knowledge versus the divine command. This tension resurfaces throughout history, from Renaissance paintings to modern literature, each time reflecting humanity’s evolving understanding of itself and its place in the cosmos. This emotional and intellectual struggle speaks to our subconscious, continuously questioning the boundaries of morality, faith, and understanding.
