Willard Metcalf created "On the Suffolk Coast" in 1893, using oil on canvas. Metcalf, an American Impressionist, painted landscapes that often evoke a sense of calm and nostalgia, reflective of the late 19th-century yearning for simpler times amidst rapid industrialization. Here, Metcalf turns his gaze to the coast. The subdued palette and soft brushstrokes create an atmospheric perspective, drawing us into the scene. You can almost feel the sea breeze and smell the salt air. It is hard to ignore the absence of people. This absence is not neutral. Who has access to leisure, to the coast, to nature? Who is working so that others can enjoy this view? Consider the landscape as a stage upon which social relations play out. The scene hints at class divisions and the romanticized escape from the urban, industrial world that was only available to some.
