This vase was made by Rörstrand, decorated with leaves and flowers, partly in relief. The pale grey-green tones are so elegant and soothing, aren’t they? The artist has used the surface of the vase almost like a canvas, building up layers of subtle glaze to create a sense of depth and texture. I imagine them carefully applying each layer, letting it dry, and then adding another, almost like a slow, meditative process. The flowers and leaves, rendered in relief, add a tactile dimension to the piece. It would have been interesting to see how the artist used their fingers and tools to create the raised patterns, giving the surface a life of its own. It reminds me a little of the work of Lucie Rie, another artist who loved to experiment with glazes and textures. Artists are always in conversation with one another across time. It’s this constant dialogue, this shared exploration of materials and techniques, that keeps art alive. Each piece builds upon the last, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and opening up new avenues for expression.
