Allison Reimold created "The Seer" using graphite and colored pencil. This work, with its careful shading and smooth blending, looks to the traditional art of drawing. The application of the graphite is really what gives this image its impact; Reimold coaxes a full range of values from her pencils. The shading of the figure’s skin and drapery gives them a soft, almost ethereal quality. The image has a dreamlike aesthetic. The colored pencil highlights certain aspects of the composition, drawing our attention to the eyes of the figure, as well as the third eye that appears on the skull. The drawing medium is important because it emphasizes the labor involved in creating this level of detail. Reimold’s technical expertise shines through. By embracing traditional techniques of fine art, and using them to depict surreal imagery, Reimold shows us how the past and present might come together.
