Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made these sketches for hanging lamps sometime in his life. I love seeing the back-and-forth of an artist working things out. These aren’t finished drawings but a way of seeing, thinking, and experiencing the world. The artist seems to be playing with different ways to hang a lamp, you know? I imagine him trying different shapes and how they might cast light. Is it direct or indirect? What kind of mood would each design create? You can see where he’s gone over lines, changing his mind, refining the form. There’s a real conversation happening on the page. This is the kind of drawing that reminds you that art is an ongoing experiment. Each artist builds on what came before, and these lamps designs are no different. They speak to a longer history of design and creativity. It’s all connected, you know?
