This is Georges Montenez’s “Studie van het hoofd van een man”, a small drawing on paper. The drawing immediately strikes you with its lack of visual information, where it appears to be a blank or very faded piece of paper. But, notice the subtle inscription at the bottom, which gives the drawing its meaning as an ‘esquisse’ or study. We can consider how Montenez challenges our expectations of the finished artwork through a series of signs. Consider how the artist destabilizes our understanding of a completed artistic statement; what we are confronted with is an invitation to think about how the creative process can lead to different outcomes. What does it mean for a work to exist not as a final product but as an example of potentiality? It emphasizes the role of interpretation over representation, so that viewers engage with the artwork not as a static object but as a dynamic encounter.
