About this artwork
This untitled painting is by the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, who died in 2005. His dystopian surrealism emerged from a personal struggle to process the atrocities and absurdities of the 20th century, shaped by both Nazi and Soviet oppression in Poland. Beksinski’s work often features disturbing imagery, which evokes feelings of anxiety and dread. The painting is dominated by monumental, decaying structures. The textures appear organic, like ossified flesh or ancient ruins. These elements are set against a murky, dreamlike backdrop. The piece is infused with a sense of inescapable, existential isolation. In the lower left, a gaunt figure emerges, hinting at the human cost of such desolation. Beksinski once stated that he wished to paint as if he were photographing dreams. What this work reveals about dreams is their capacity to be haunted by history.
