Leo Gestel sketched "Two Farmers Walking and Talking" with chalk on paper, but when, exactly? That's a bit of a mystery. What strikes me first is the economy of line. Gestel captures the essence of these figures with a few, confident strokes. The chalk work isn't about precision; it's about feeling the weight of their coats, the set of their shoulders. Look at the way he suggests the turn of the head of the man on the right, with just a simple line for his nose. The grayish-brown paper peeks through, acting as a kind of atmospheric haze. It gives the piece a sense of being unfinished, like a fleeting moment caught on paper. There’s something wonderfully vulnerable about that. The simple subject matter and direct style reminds me of some of the drawings of Van Gogh. Like Van Gogh, Gestel seems to find a deep beauty and sincerity in the everyday. Art isn't about answers, it's about the ongoing conversation and the questions that keep us engaged.
