Carel Adolph Lion Cachet designed this wallpaper, "Red Cabbage", in 1897. Cachet was working in the Netherlands during the Dutch Art Nouveau movement, a period where artists sought to create a new national style. Cachet spent much of his youth in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. There, the exposure to Indonesian art and culture profoundly shaped his artistic vision. This wallpaper shows a clear Indonesian influence, particularly in its organic, flowing forms and symmetrical design. Cachet blended Western techniques with Indonesian motifs. He sought to bridge cultural divides, integrating the exotic with the familiar, challenging the prevailing norms of European aesthetics. The choice of "red cabbage" as a motif is interesting. It's both ordinary and extraordinary, reflecting a desire to find beauty in the everyday. It invites us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world, to see the potential for beauty and inspiration in the most unassuming of places.
