Egbert Rubertus Derk Schaap made this drawing, *Huis tussen bomen aan een weg,* with graphite, charcoal or some kind of soft pencil. The whole thing is an exercise in tone, a real masterclass in grey. I love the way the marks accumulate to create a convincing image of a place. Look at the big tree on the left, it's full of scribbly lines, kind of chaotic, but somehow it captures the essence of the tree, its bulk and the way the branches reach out. I'm interested in the road too and the way it curves and recedes into the distance, inviting you to follow it into the unknown. Schaap's mark making reminds me of some of Klimt’s landscape drawings – the way he uses loose, scribbled lines to build up a sense of atmosphere and depth, so yes, for me, this drawing celebrates the simple beauty of the everyday.
