This is a photograph, taken by Robert Frank, at CBS TV studio in Burbank, California. I wonder, what was it like for Frank to point his camera, click, and capture this? It's so interesting to me, as a painter, to see how other artists see. The tonality in this black and white image, it's not about one gesture but many gazes, all these audience members lined up, all looking different ways. Frank has captured a mood, a sense of expectation, and a hint of the artificial. I feel a kind of awkwardness and also a sense of longing in this shot. This work reminds me of other photographs I have seen over the years. Each image contributes something unique to how we perceive the world and the people around us. It shows a kind of humanity. Artists are constantly inspired by each other, building upon the ideas of those who came before, I am one of them. Embracing ambiguity is important in photography and in painting, it allows for endless interpretation, and as much meaning as we want to bring.
