This energetic, untitled work was made by Sam Francis, who died in 1994. Look closely and you will see that the medium here is ink and acrylic on paper, a departure from the artist's better-known large-scale canvases. Although on a smaller scale, the way the paint has been applied is where the excitement lies, the result of a controlled yet spontaneous approach. Francis dripped, poured, and brushed the ink and acrylic onto the paper, creating a sense of fluidity and movement. The translucent quality of the ink allows the white of the paper to shine through, creating a sense of luminosity. The vivid colors pop against the blank space, energizing the entire composition. The processes involved allowed Francis to balance deliberation and chance. Every mark, splatter, and stroke contributes to the dynamic composition, proving that it is not just the final product that matters but the performative aspect of its creation.
