This energetic, untitled work was made by Sam Francis, who died in 1994. Look closely and you will see that the medium here is ink and acrylic on paper, a departure from the artist's better-known large-scale canvases. Although on a smaller scale, the way the paint has been applied is where the excitement lies, the result of a controlled yet spontaneous approach. Francis dripped, poured, and brushed the ink and acrylic onto the paper, creating a sense of fluidity and movement.
