Antoon Derkinderen made this drawing of the Evangelists Luke and John in preparation for a larger commission. We can see the artist working with the simplest of materials - graphite pencil and paper - to lay out the composition and design. What is compelling here is how the artist has used the most elemental of artistic processes to create a drawing that would be the foundation of a larger art piece. Notice how the medium influences the appearance, particularly the weight of lines used to describe the figures and their clothing. The artist employed these techniques, tools and sketching traditions within the history of creative practices, and aesthetics of craft and fine arts. This shows the labour and skill involved in the production process, and blurs the boundaries between fine art and craft.
