This vintage print called 'Een clown onder de roodhuiden' by Pellerin & Cie is such a captivating little world rendered in soft hues, like a muted rainbow. I like to think about how this was made, maybe with lithography, how they carefully layered colors to bring these characters to life. It is so interesting, each scene like a tiny stage, with clowns and Indigenous people interacting in ways that are both playful and a bit unsettling when seen from today's point of view. I can imagine the artist wanting to create a narrative, a series of adventures, and maybe even trying to capture something about the cultural clashes of their time. It reminds me of other narrative prints I've seen, how they use sequential imagery to tell a story, kind of like an early comic strip, with a slightly surreal touch. Each gesture, each interaction, is a way of seeing, thinking, and experiencing the world, filtered through the artist's imagination, but also echoing the times they lived in. It shows how artists are always in conversation, remixing and reinterpreting the world around them.
