This wall clock was made in 1937 by Marie Famularo; a delicate rendering in graphite and watercolor. I can just imagine Marie, peering at the clock and meticulously painting it. Look at all that detailed decorative woodwork; it’s so painstaking and precise! The grain of the wood paneling alone makes my eyes hurt. But the clock face itself is wonderfully ambiguous, somehow. What time is it? Is it broken? The hands are wonky, but the numbers are neatly drawn. I wonder, did Marie have a clock like this in her own home? Was she fascinated by the way time seems to slip through our fingers? Or maybe she was just interested in the challenge of capturing all those little details. This piece shows how everyday objects can be portals to somewhere else.
